Primary Care Performers
Primary Care Trusts have a legal duty to manage lists of GPs, dentists and optometrists who work in the NHS. Pharmacists are not regulated in the same way and are currently the subject of a separate process. Except in certain limited circumstances, a GP, dentist or optometrist cannot provide NHS primary care services (which includes working as a locum or in an out of hours service) unless they are included on a Primary Care Trust’s Performers List. Inclusion on the Performers List of any Primary Care Trust enables them to provide NHS primary care services anywhere in England.
Applications to join NHS Somerset’s Performers List
The Performers List application process enables Primary Care Trusts to satisfy themselves that a GP, dentist or optometrist is a suitable person to be delivering NHS services by requiring them to provide a range of information about their training, qualifications and experience.
NHS Somerset has adopted a new policy for applications to join its Performers List, which is in effect from 1 April 2011 and which can be downloaded here.
Applicants to join NHS Somerset’s Performers List will need to send the following items to the address below:

the completed and signed Application Form

the first group of documents mentioned in Appendix 1 (see also this checklist)

Appendix 2 and Appendix 3 completed and signed

a completed application form for an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau certificate – this is not available for download so please email the address below and ask to be posted a form

Applicants will also need to attend a face-to-face meeting with a member of the Contracts team at a pre-arranged time. Copies of various other documents (listed in Appendix 1 above) should be brought to that meeting so that they can be checked and copied. The Criminal Records Bureau form will be verified, and a brief assessment of your English language competency will also be undertaken at this meeting.
